about

David Eagleman's story "Sum" describes a view of the afterlife wherein all of the activities of your earthly life are grouped together. Whatever you spent the greatest amount of time doing on earth, would occupy that much unbroken time in the afterlife. The story is read by actor Jeffrey Tambor. Mr Tambor's reading of this story was very musical to begin with so I set his speech to music. I then arranged the "activities" described into musical sections which were proportionally as long as the activities described. For example: "2 years of boredom" is the longest section, "18 months waiting in line" is a little shorter and "15 months looking for lost items" is even shorter. The musical sections continue to get shorter throughout.
The last section of the piece lists these activities randomly in quick succession (the way they are organized in our present life).
