The 180Gs: "Well" (Captain Beefheart cover)

about

This is a cover of one of the 3 songs on "Trout Mask Replica" which consist only of a solo vocal track. The G's "traced" the original song (precicely replicating the notes, rhythms and pauses of the original song) and added their own harmony. It is possible to play Captain Beefheart's original vocal along with the Gs' harmonization. The effect is ghostly and compelling. However, it probably violates copyright law to release the original recording, even when augmented with many other voices.

Since this song is sung almost exclusively on 2 pitches, the Gs had to get creative with their harmonization using many different chords that contain one or both of the notes in the melody. The result is a logical and expressive musical flow from beginning to end.

A sincere word of caution: Once you hear the 180Gs' version of this song,

you cannot "un-hear" it!

With the completion of this song, the Gs now have only 2 more songs to record before completing the world's first a cappella cover version of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's "Trout Mask Replica" double album!
